  • Your First Wing Chun Class: What to Expect

When you first start in something new, you might feel a little intimidated. Especially if it involves martial arts. If you're thinking about trying our Wing Chun class, I know that you might be wondering what your very first class will be like.

Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect when you come to your first Wing Chun class. We want you to feel ready and confident.

1. A Warm Welcome

First, I want you to know that we pride ourselves on being the friendliest school in all of Las Vegas.

When you walk in, you’ll be greeted by your instructor and other students.

Don’t worry if you don’t know anyone yet. Our school (The Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy) is filled with friendly, down-to-earth people just like you.

Everyone here remembers what it was like to be new.

2. No Fancy Uniform Required

For your first class, just wear something comfortable that you can move around in. Sweats and a t-shirt is fine or whatever you use to workout at home.

We train barefoot because we have mats. No special uniform is needed unless you decide to stick with it.

3. You’ll Learn the Basics

The class will start with a short warm-up to get your body moving. The warmup is not like boot camp.  You won't be doing hundreds of pushups. It consists of the moves that you will be doing that night.

Then, you’ll be introduced to some core Wing Chun principles, like:

  • The centerline (the imaginary line down the middle of your body you want to protect and control)
  • Basic stance and footwork
  • A few simple strikes and blocks (like the straight punch or Tan Sau)

These are the building blocks of Wing Chun. Everything else grows from here.

4. You Won’t Be Thrown Into Sparring

I know that you might be worried that you’ll have to fight someone on day one.

Don’t stress. Your first class is all about learning at your own pace. There’s no sparring or pressure to do anything you’re not comfortable with.

Martial arts training should be fun and enjoyable.

5. You’ll Practice With a Partner

Some drills are done solo. Others are done with a partner. Your partner is going to simulate what an attacker would do in a real life situation.

If you feel ready, you can try some light partner drills to work on timing, distance, and rhythm.

6. Expect to Have Questions

Everyone has questions their first time. Wing Chun is the science of fighting, so much of it is going to feel counterintuitive. What’s this move called? Am I doing this right? Why do we stand like this? Curiosity is the hallmark of an exceptional student. It is the one thing that is going to make you better.

7. You’ll Leave Feeling Accomplished

By the end of your first class, I promise that you’ll have learned something new, and feel more confident than when you walked in. You would have taken the first step on a really cool journey. That’s a win.

You will be proud of yourself for showing up.

Don’t Overthink It

Wing Chun  and actually all martial arts aren't about being perfect—it’s about progress. So come in with an open mind. I know you have been putting it off for too long.
